Lite FM

I heard Bon Jovi's Livin' On A Prayer on the Lite Rock station while driving out to Montauk this weekend and 1980s era Tina Turner on the Oldies station. Radio, how you have changed. Though it's still pre-season, Montauk was starting to shake off winter and spring. The restaurants were open though not exactly bustling. The beaches were sunny but empty and cool. And there were real 1950s oldies pumping over the sound systems of nearly every store, bakery and restaurant we went to. It's as though the tourist industry were trying to conjure a Dirty Dancing nostalgia for childhood vacations we may or may not have taken by plying us with doo-wop and bubblegum. What can I say? It worked.

Cassettes 4 Sale

I went to a record store today. I had read about Bill Callahan's new record, Apocalypse, and wanted to buy it. Buy it, not download it. On CD. I wouldn't have thought I needed to clarify that, but Other Music had a shelf of new cassettes for sale. Mostly small run, limited release, collector's pieces, I gathered.

I wonder how they sound and if the tape hiss induces a dreamy nostalgia or false memories of the 1980s.
